## Why November 24?

After Türkiye adopted the Latin alphabet in 1928, the Nation’s Schools were opened to teach adults to read and write. Atatürk was named their Head Teacher (*Başöğretmen*), and the regulation for the schools was published on November 24, 1928.

November 24 has been observed as Teachers’ Day since 1981, the centenary of Atatürk’s birth.

## How it is celebrated

Students bring flowers and cards, write notes and put on small ceremonies at school. Many adults use the day to message a teacher who made a difference. It is not a public holiday, so schools stay open.

World Teachers’ Day, set by UNESCO, is a separate observance on October 5.
