## Why November 14?

The date is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, born in 1891, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1921. Insulin turned diabetes from a fatal diagnosis into a condition people could live with.

## A short history

The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization created the day in 1991, in response to rising concern about diabetes worldwide. In 2006 a United Nations resolution made it an official UN day.
