The app

Is there an app that tells you what national day it is today?

Yes. What Day Is It? is a free iPhone app that shows today’s special days the moment you open it and sends one short notification each morning. It covers national and public holidays, world and awareness days, and fun observances such as National Candy Day, for 193 countries.

What you see every day

  • The main day for your country, with one line about what it means.
  • Other days on the same date: world days, awareness days and weeks.
  • A fun day, when there is one, shown as “And a fun one”.
  • Around the world: holidays in the other countries you follow.

You choose your home country when you start. The app picks the main day for that country, so a user in the United States sees Thanksgiving first on the fourth Thursday of November, and a user in Germany sees German holidays first.

One notification a day, at the time you choose

Pick a time, for example 9:00. Each morning you get one notification with the name of the day and a short line about it. On Sunday evening a “What’s on next week?” summary lists the special days and your own plans for the next seven days. You can turn either of them off in the app.
