Where the name came from

The term appeared in 2005, in a press release from Shop.org, the online arm of the National Retail Federation. Retailers had noticed that online sales jumped on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The usual explanation was that people got back to work, where the internet was faster than at home.

Home connections caught up long ago. The name stayed, and the day turned into a planned sales event.

The line has blurred. Most big stores now run the same sale online across the whole weekend, and many deals start days early.

Before you buy

  • Check the price history of the item. A big discount can be measured from a price nobody ever paid.
  • Read the return policy, since sale items sometimes have different terms.
  • Type store addresses yourself. Scam emails and fake shop links peak this week.
