What does it mark?

Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, recalls the story of Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, and the ram provided in his place. It takes place during the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Why does the date change?

The holiday starts on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic lunar calendar. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar one, so the date moves earlier each year. Dates can differ by a day between countries. The dates here follow Türkiye’s official calendar.

How it is celebrated in Türkiye

The day begins with the holiday prayer. Those who are able to do so have an animal sacrificed, and it is customary to share the meat with relatives, neighbors and people in need. Families visit one another, and younger people kiss the hands of their elders. Many Turks also use the long break to travel.
