Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867, in Warsaw, and the date is marked as a day to remember her work. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win two.
Who was Marie Curie?
Born Maria Skłodowska, she moved to Paris in 1891 to study at the Sorbonne, because women could not attend university in Russian-ruled Warsaw. There she met the physicist Pierre Curie, and the two worked side by side.
In 1898 the Curies announced two new elements: polonium, named after her homeland, and radium. She also helped establish the word "radioactivity."
Two Nobel Prizes
- 1903, Physics: shared with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel, for research on radiation.
- 1911, Chemistry: on her own, for the discovery of polonium and radium.
She remains the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences.
Her legacy
During the First World War she helped set up mobile X-ray units for treating wounded soldiers. Years of work with radioactive materials damaged her health, and she died in 1934. In 1995 she became the first woman buried in the Panthéon in Paris on her own merits.
