Why November 11?

The First World War stopped with an armistice that took effect on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The United States marked the date as Armistice Day. In 1954 Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, so it would honor veterans of all wars.

The same date is still marked as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Canada and Australia.

Veterans Day or Memorial Day?

Veterans Day thanks all who have served, living or dead. Memorial Day, in May, remembers those who died in military service.

How it is marked

Parades, ceremonies at memorials and a wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery are the best-known traditions. Federal offices close and many schools do too. Many people simply say thank you to a veteran they know.
