Türkiye celebrates Teachers’ Day on November 24 every year. The date is linked to the title of "Head Teacher" given to Atatürk during the alphabet reform of 1928.
Why November 24?
After Türkiye adopted the Latin alphabet in 1928, the Nation’s Schools were opened to teach adults to read and write. Atatürk was named their Head Teacher (Başöğretmen), and the regulation for the schools was published on November 24, 1928.
November 24 has been observed as Teachers’ Day since 1981, the centenary of Atatürk’s birth.
How it is celebrated
Students bring flowers and cards, write notes and put on small ceremonies at school. Many adults use the day to message a teacher who made a difference. It is not a public holiday, so schools stay open.
World Teachers’ Day, set by UNESCO, is a separate observance on October 5.
