Who was Saint Valentine?

Less is known than you might think. The early Christian calendar records more than one martyr named Valentine, and the romantic stories about them were mostly added much later. A link to the Roman festival of Lupercalia is often repeated, but historians dispute it.

How did it become a day for love?

The earliest known link between the day and romance comes from the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, in The Parliament of Fowls, written in the 14th century. In the poem, birds choose their mates on Saint Valentine’s day. The idea caught on, handwritten love notes followed, and printed cards became common in later centuries.

Valentine’s Day in Türkiye

In Türkiye, it is known as Sevgililer Günü and is marked with flowers, chocolate and dinner out. In 2027, February 14 falls during Ramadan, so many couples there may swap dinner for iftar.

Ways to mark the day

  • Write a short message by hand. It lasts longer than flowers.
  • Cook the meal you had on your first date.
  • Send a card to someone far away.
  • Celebrate friends too. Nobody says it has to be a couple.
